How to create the perfect smoky eye

Being in lockdown, a lot of us have more time to play around and create new makeup looks.

A great one to try and perfect is the well-know and loved smoky eye.

This is style of eye makeup application where dark eyeshadow is applied to the top and bottom of your eyes and is then blended out for a dramatic effect.

Allure has revealed the best tips to help you create this gorgeous look. with the help of professional makeup artist Troy Surratt.

1) Stay Smudge-Free with a Primer

Use a small bit of primer before applying any eyeshadow.

This will help ensure your dark shadow and eyeliner stays put and doesn't get easily smeared outside your lids and rims.

2) Use a Bit of Brown

Add warmth with some brown shades.

A tip is to line underneath the eyes with a black pencil, then take a small shadow brush and dip into a brown shade, then blend into the pencil.

This will create a beautiful, diffused look.

3) Play With Colors

Your eye look doesn't have to be black for it to look smoky.

You can use other colours like deep plum, navy, charcoal grey and dark olive.

4) Stay Close to the Lashes

Be careful about how far down you take the makeup as it shouldn't go any further down than your lower lashes.

Make sure the colour is denser towards the lash line and defuse it the further it goes.

5) Blur Your Lines

While smoky eye makeup is carefully applied, it's not meant to look that way. Smoky eyes should be artfully smudged. Run a crease brush or mini-dome brush along your lids to blend out the eye shadow for a signature smoky look. Gently smudge the color under your eyes, as well.

6) Consider Placement

Keep eye shadow under the iris and the outer corners.

You don't want to bring eye makeup into your tear troughs.

7) Clean Up After Yourself

Apply the eye makeup first and clean up any messy bits with cotton buds or eye makeup remover.

Applying a little highlighter to the inner corners to make you look more awake and alive.
