Building a Metal Farm in Subnautica 2 is one of the best ways to automate resource collection once you reach the later stages of the game to get those rare metals.
Instead of repeatedly venturing into dangerous biomes in Subnautica 2 to gather them manually, the Metal Farm lets you generate a steady supply of essential materials right at your base with enough power. It is especially useful for crafting advanced upgrades, vehicles, and base expansions, and it’ll also help you to prepare for the game’s future updates.
How to unlock and build Metal Farm in Subnautica 2
To build a Metal Farm, you first need to unlock its blueprint by scanning three Metal Farm fragments located in the glowing neon green pool area in the Root Canyon. To reach there, use your Tadpole to go near the Alien Ruins Research Base. This late-game biome is around 450 meters deep, so you’ll need your Tadpole equipped with a Depth Module to safely reach it.
Once you reach the biome near Zip’s second black box, scan any Metal Farms using your scanner to get the blueprint. Before you leave, make your way to the pool and collect the Axum Bacterial Culture. Then, obtain the Troilite by farming the green-colored deposits, which is essential for crafting the required ingot for the Metal Farm.
Go back to your base. Open the Habitat Builder and head to the Cultivation tab in the end to craft it. The Metal Farm requires one Mangalloy Ingot and one Axum Bacterial Culture that you collected from the biome.
To craft a Mangalloy Ingot, you’ll need one Titanium Ingot, Atacamite, and a Troilite. You can process these required materials in your Processor. It is also best to place the Metal Farm close to your base, and it doesn’t need to be close to the resources to produce them.
How to use Metal Farm in Subnautica 2
After making the Metal Farm and placing it outside your base, you can connect it to a reliable power source, since it constantly consumes energy while operating. Using the Metal Farm is straightforward after it is powered. Interact with the structure and insert raw metal such as Titanium, Quartz, Silver, or Troilite.
The Metal Farm will begin processing the inserted resource over time. It takes roughly 10-20 minutes, depending on the rarity of the metal, to produce a few of them or one in the case of late-game rare metals like Trollite.
Once the cycle is complete, it creates a mineral node on the outside of the structure. Use the Sonic Resonator to break the node and collect the materials it produces.
For maximum efficiency, build multiple Metal Farms and connect them to a strong power network like Hydropower setups so they don’t rely on the time of day. This setup provides a steady stream of resources and makes crafting advanced late-game equipment much easier.
