How to be a professional blogger

Whether you're an amateur blogger who wants to make a living out of your hobby, or a working writer seeking a new challenge, this course will give you a panoramic view of the blogging industry and the knowledge you'll need to make it pay. Speakers including Patrick Dalton, creator the widely acclaimed blog and book series Shit London, Sonya Barber, editor of the Time Out London blog, and Eat Like a Girl founder Niamh Shields will discuss how to create truly professional content, as well as the most effective ways to make a living from blogging.

This comprehensive one-day event covers the practicalities of attracting and dealing with sponsors, affiliate marketeers and book publishers, as well as the best ways to gain employment in the industry. You'll also learn how to build a bigger and more loyal audience through social media and how to create consistently compelling content.

Tutor profiles

Patrick Dalton is a London-based photographer and author who founded the Shit London blog in 2010. Since launching, the blog has generated three spinoff books about London, and two international editions covering New York and Australia. In 2013 the British Library archived the blog as part of the 100 websites: Capturing the digital universe project, which lists sites deemed essential reading for future generations.

Niamh Shields is a UK-based food blogger, travel writer and cookery author. She is one of the pioneers of the UK food blogging scene and is heavily involved in the social media surrounding it. Her blog, Eat Like a Girl, is known as one of the best in the business. Niamh was recently listed by The Times among their 40 bloggers who really count. As well as writing and blogging, Niamh teaches cooking classes, and regularly hosts pop-up brunches, lunches and dinners.

Sonya Barber is the editor of the Time Out London blog which launched in March 2011. Since then, she has blogged about London's hottest happenings seven days a week, posting over 3,500 blogs, as well as creating sharable content for Twitter and Facebook. Before she became the 'Blogmistress', Sonya freelanced for many years for Time Out Magazine and other publications. Find Sonya on Twitter here.
