How Timo Werner's Chelsea arrival will change Tammy Abraham's role under Frank Lampard

Those who think that Timo Werner's arrival at Chelsea next season is bad news for Tammy Abraham have not been paying close enough attention to the 24-year-old Germany international's performances in the Bundesliga.

Any close analysis of the RB Leipzig forward, who last week completed a £47million move to Stamford Bridge subject to a medical, indicates that the Blues' current leading scorer stands to benefit greatly from his arrival.

One of the biggest positives to signing Werner is his versatility and viewing him as a direct competitor with Abraham for one spot is rather missing the point of the Bundesliga's second top scorer joining Chelsea.

Alan Smith breaks down Chelsea's move for Timo Werner and who they may look to next

Yes, Werner has played up top by himself on occasion this season but he has also acted as a false nine, out wide and, most intriguingly for the future at Chelsea, in a free role behind a centre forward.

It is in that latter position that Werner has looked at his best, his unpredictable off-ball runs causing Bundesliga defences nightmares.

Take the 5-0 win away to Mainz last month in which he scored a hat-trick while playing behind Yussuf Poulsen.

As the touch match map below shows, Werner was as active out wide as in a central area and regularly dropped deep to link up play and start moves.

His three goals were a lesson in clinical finishing and it could easily have been more if he had not been denied by the crossbar in the first half and an impressive save from Florian Muller in the second.

Abraham's game is built more around his physical presence, which Chelsea hope can become even greater as he bulks up, and close-ranging finishing. As we have known for some time, he very rarely scores from outside the area but thrives as a poacher.

Werner, whose main fault is a habit of being called needlessly offside, has more of an all-round game. Expect him to be used in a range of positions depending on the opposition.

Suggesting that it is an either or choice between the two players, however, is missing the point.

Of course, if Abraham's performance level drops then Werner - or Olivier Giroud - will lead the line but to begin with it the latest signing must be viewed as an extra piece rather than a replacement.

Lampard has already spoken to Abraham about the additional competition and his message on Friday was clear.

"He has been fantastic this season," the head coach said.. "He has to sustain and improve because at Chelsea we have demands. "I am happy to have options and competitions for places."

For Abraham the rest of this season is vitally important, starting with this afternoon's trip to Villa Park, but there should be no doubt that he can co-exist with Werner.
