How Tammy Abraham is backing himself as Chelsea's number nine amid £53m Timo Werner signing

Tammy Abraham has backed himself to pick up where he left off before injuring his ankle in early spring with Chelsea's top scorer also dropping a hint that he is the man to lead Frank Lampard's frontline for the long-term.

The England striker is expected to start away to Aston Villa, for whom he spent last season on loan, in the Blues' first Premier League game post-coronavirus.

But with TImo Werner set to complete a £53million move from RB Leipzig, placing extra pressure on Abraham to perform, the 22-year-old.. said that he knows what he is capable of and thinks he is the man to bring success.

Deloitte predicts Premier League clubs will lose £1bn revenue this season

"As a striker you need to believe in yourself and have that confidence," he told the club's 5th Stand app in a short interview published on Friday evening.

"Being Chelsea's number nine, you've got big boots to fill so I need to believe that Im the man, that I can score and do well for the team. You need that feeling going into every game.

"I know my abilities and what I'm capable of doing."

In ordinary circumstances Abraham would have received a hero's welcome at Villa Park on Sunday week having been serenaded by the visiting supporters in the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge.

He remains thankful for the experience he had in helping Dean Smith's team to promotion via the Championship's play-offs last season, although admitted that he initially thought he would end up going on loan to another Premier League side.

Wolverhampton Wanderers were among those keen on securing his services at the time.

"Last season when I knew I was going out on loan, my plan was to remain in the Premier League but it didn't happen that way," Abraham added.

"Thankfully I went to a good club like Aston Villa. I could build that confidence bak and do my thing there and we had a really good season."
