How Sam Fender celebrated after headlining UK's first socially distanced gig in Newcastle

Sam Fender made history on Tuesday night when he headlined the UK's first socially distanced gig, playing to a capacity crowd on home turf.

The North Shields singer, having had to postpone the biggest show of his career to date at the city's Utilita Arena in April due to the coronavirus pandemic, delighted a crowd of around 2,500 people at the purpose built outdoor Virgin Money Unity Arena, right next to Newcastle Racecourse in Gosforth Park.

The gig was the first of its kind, with Sam delivering the goods to thousands of expectant fans who enjoyed the open air concert from their own socially distanced pens and platforms, to ensure it was staged in line with Government guidance.

Sam's set included the likes of That Sound and Will We Talk and, a glance on social media revealed that he also performed three previously unreleased tracks.

Having treated his many Instagram followers to some behind the scenes footage before he arrived on stage, Sam returned to Insta after the gig to say: "Thanks to everyone who came tonight, it was f****ng belter! Can't wait for Thursday....just got to crack on with what I do best."

He then spun his phone round to reveal a screen with War Zone it, which, if you aren't familiar with, is a battle royale video game from the makers of Call of Duty.

He also took to Twitter to post: "Thanks for tonight you f****ng legends."

Sam will perform the second of his sold out gigs at the Virgin Money Unity Arena on Thursday night, with his shows paving the way for plenty of others which will see a host of big stars entertain at Gosforth Park over the next month.

Other acts on the bill include Jason Manford, Jimmy Carr, Ronan Keating, Bongo's Bingo and Becky Hill.
