How Rob Lee hilariously stitched up Alan Shearer with Sir Bobby Robson at Selhurst Park

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has revealed the time Rob Lee stitched him up with Sir Bobby Robson with a mobile phone at Selhurst Park.

Shearer and Lee both thrived under Robson at Newcastle in one of the most successful periods in the club's modern history.

Newcastle's record goalscorer has even credited Robson with galvanising his career after a tough period under Ruud Gullit but he fell foul of his manager's anger on a visit to Selhurst Park.

Alongside host Gary Lineker and fellow pundit Micah Richards, Shearer was discussing the '10 worst places to visit' in English football on the latest Match of the Day: Top 10 podcast and it evoked a hilarious memory from a visit to South London that involved Robson's hatred of mobile phones.

"It wasn't going so well at Newcastle and I can't remember if we were playing Wimbledon or Crystal Palace," Shearer said.

"We were getting a right old telling off by Bobby Robson at half-time and Bobby hated lateness, he hated mobile phones.

"Rob Lee before the game had flipped my phone up so it was on loud. We were getting a b********g at half-time and the gaffer is going mad telling everybody what he thought of them.

"Anyway, Rob Lee is in the toilet and he had taken his phone with him and rang my phone. My phone's went off and I have said: 'I'm really sorry, boss'.

"He has gone: 'I f*****g hate mobile phones', and I have looked at my phone a minute later and Rob Lee has texted me from the toilets: 'Not only have you had a stinker in the first half, you have had a stinker putting your phone on!'"

Lineker, who worked under Robson during his time as England manager, revealed his own mobile phone story with the former Newcastle boss.

"He was working with us on TV and he is suddenly going: 'I have lost my phone, I can't find my phone anywhere'," he said.

"So I've said I will call it for him. It starts ringing and he gets it out of his pocket, puts it to his ear and I swear this is true. He says: 'Hello, can I call you back? I am just looking for my phone?'

"He did laugh afterwards but it was a brilliant story."
