How Prague Zoo is keeping its polar bears cool amid scorching heat

  • Prague Zoo deployed tons of ice on Thursday to provide relief to its animal residents amidst a scorching European heatwave.
  • Polar bears Aleut and Gregor, 16-year-old twins, immediately enjoyed rolling in beds of ice cubes in their outdoor enclosure.
  • Zoo spokesperson Filip Mašek said: "The bears cool off with it and at the same time it's an enrichment of their life in the zoo."
  • The zoo began its ice provision programme two years ago in response to climate change and the escalating frequency of extreme temperatures.
  • An early heatwave saw the Czech Republic record its hottest day ever on June 28 at 41.9 C.
