How often you need to wash your bras and when it's time to get a new one

It is something which can cause a lot of debate among women, just how often should you wash your bra?

While it is an item of underwear that sits close to the skin, some feel washing a bra after one day is excessive, preferring to wear it for a number of days before putting in the washing machine.

But a bra expert from Marks and Spencer has spoken to the Mirror Online to tell women when she thinks they should be popping them in the laundry and how to find the best fit.

Julia Mercer is the bra fit expert and technical manager at the high street store and says you should probably think about washing your bra after each use.

She said: "I would recommend washing after each use as this keeps your bra clean and fresh."

And she also has a few things to say about how long you should be keeping hold of your delicates.

Julia added: "In my opinion, a bra is at its best in its first year of being worn."

So it maybe time to go through your collection and pop old ones in the bin or donate them to charity .

Getting the right fit

But if you are looking to get a new bra, now that you have disposed of the old one, how can you ensure a good fit?

Julia said there are a number of things to look out for to make sure your bra is both comfortable and supportive.

Firstly, she recommends getting fitted, regularly.

Bras are fitted by taking two measurements, and it only takes a few minutes.

You can wear your old bra while these measurements are being taken.

The band size is the size of your rib cage, and is taken by measuring just below the strap of your existing bra.

It's recorded in even numbers, e.g. 30, 32, 34, 36.

The second measurement is the bust.

The person doing your fitting will then work out the difference between the rib cage and the bust size and work out your cup size. This will be a letter, e.g. A, B, C, D, DD.

There are areas too look at that signal a bad fit when trying on bras and looking for the right size and shape.

The four-boob effect

Julia said: "This is a common problem we see regularly.

"It's very common with women who have put on weight as the breast is made up of 75% fat.

"Some women don't want to go up a cup size and continue to wear the wrong size which can make outwear look unflattering.

"Did you know that if you wear the correct cup size you can actually look smaller?"

Julia said: "Unfortunately every woman, no matter their size, has this issue and can be made worse if the underband of the bra is too tight.

"A good tip is to wear a shaped back bra as this smoothes any lumps and bumps."

Cups are too big

If you've lost weight recently, there is a good chance you cups will be too big.

She added: "Our 8,000 experienced fit experts in stores around the country are trained not only to select bras which fit perfectly, but also understand that the process can be daunting for some women, so are trained in making the experience as comfortable and easy as possible."
