Shane Lowry will pocket €1.73million after securing his first golf major win.
The Offaly man blew away the entire field at Royal Portrush Golf Club to claim the Open Championship by six shots on Sunday.
The 32-year-old lifted the prestigious Claret Jug after the victory, while paying tribute to his family who he said sacrificed so much to enable him to play the sport.
He was congratulated on the 18th green by his wife Wendy and his young daughter Iris in emotional scenes.
But it was a far cry from 12 months ago as Lowry suffered his fourth consecutive missed cut at the Open after rounds of 90 and 93 before losing his PGA Tour card.
He said: “That just shows how fickle golf is. Golf is a weird sport and you never know what's around the corner.
"That's why you need to remind yourself, and you need other people there to remind you. You need to fight through the bad times.
"I sat in the car park in Carnoustie on Thursday, almost a year ago right to this week, and I cried. Golf wasn't my friend at the time.
"It was something that became very stressful and it was weighing on me and I just didn't like doing it. What a difference a year makes.”
Englishman Tommy Fleetwood finished second, American Tony Finau came third, while Brooks Koepka and Lee Westwood shared fourth place.
