How much Matt Hancock will be paid as an MP while he's on I'm A Celebrity

Matt Hancock has had his Tory whip suspended as he was confirmed as an additional campmate for this year's series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!.

The Conservative Party suspended the whip after it emerged the former Health Secretary will be flying to Australia for the ITV hit show.

Despite losing the Tory whip, Hancock will remain as an MP for West Suffolk, a role he has been in since 2010.

After he has battled Bushtucker trials involving animal genitals and creepy crawlies, Hancock could possibly be voted out of the competition... or go on win the title of King of the Jungle.

But will the West Suffolk MP be paid for his role while Down Under? Here's everything you need to know.

The new I'm A Celeb contestant will reportedly still be entitled to his MP salary of £84,144 while he is Down Under.

I'm A Celebrity usually takes place over a space of three weeks, and if he remains in the jungle for the full length of the show, he will receive £4,841 from his MP salary, according to Evening Standard.

A probe is being launched into whether the MP should receive his taxpayer-funded salary while in the jungle, as questions have been raised over whether he followed the rules on seeking jobs within two years of leaving office, reports Mail Online.

When speaking of his role as an MP while he's on I'm A Celebrity, Hancock said: "As an MP, my first priority is to my constituents. I have agreed with the show's producers that I can be reached at any point on any urgent constituency matters."

According to The Sun, the West Suffolk MP will also be paid around £400,000 to appear as a campmate on the new series.

A source told the publication: "Matt's pay deal with I'm a Celebrity is around £400,000.

"[It is] one of the largest ever show fees to have been paid out."

He will make a donation to his local St Nicholas Hospice in Suffolk from his ITV earnings.

The former health secretary has defended his decision to join I'm A Celebrity after facing backlash from fellow MPs and the public.

Writing in the Sun, the former health secretary said politicians must "go where the people are".

"I haven't lost my marbles or had one too many pina coladas," he insisted.

The MP landed Down Under on Sunday ahead of the launch show of I'm A Celeb, where he will join the camp alongside former Love Island star Olivia Attwood, Singer Boy George and radio DJ Chris Moyles.

What are the latest betting odds for I'm A Celebrity?

The MP is currently 1-2 with Coral to do more Bushtuckers than any previous contestant in the show's history.

“Punters have been knocking us over to back Matt Hancock to be the first contestant to leave I'm A Celeb. They believe the former Health Secretary will get the boot from the public at the first opportunity," said Coral's John Hill.

"Hancock is as short as 1-2 to do more Bucktucker Trials than any other contestant in I'm A Celeb history," added Hill.

In the outright betting on the series, Jill Scott is the 3-1 favourite with Coral, while Olivia Attwood and Mike Tindall are next best at 5-1.
