How many people have survived coronavirus and been pronounced all clear around the world

Coronavirus is dominating the world headlines with huge focus on the number of people who have contracted the disease and died as a result.

Countries have implemented strategies to prevent the virus from spreading which has included banning travel, postponing mass gatherings and sports fixtures and telling people to self-isolate of they are showing symptoms.

The percentage needing intensive care - which has been consistently around 10% of diagnosed patients in Italy - is worrying for all those at risk and the death toll among the elderly has been high.

But the vast majority of people who have contracted coronavirus have survived and almost half of those diagnosed to date across the world have already been given the all clear.

Here's a breakdown of the number of people who have recovered according to figures from the John Hopkins University coronavirus resource centre.

As of March 14, a total of 147,838 people around the world have contracted coronavirus, and so far 5,539 have died and 71,718 have recovered.

This equates to 48% of those formally diagnosed with the virus having recovered while 3.7% have died. It is thought that the true mortality rate will be lower than that as many people who have contracted the virus may not have been diagnosed.

In the UK, there have been a total of 1,140 confirmed cases, 60 of which are from Wales. So far 21 people have died and 18 have recovered. This equates to a mortality rate of around 2% in the UK so far - although this is likely to change.

China has the most confirmed cases of coronavirus with a total of 80,976 people. However China brought the outbreak under control with draconian travel restrictions and few new cases are being diagnosed there. So far, 65,773 people have recovered and 3,193 people have died. This suggests 81% of the people who contracted the virus in China have already been given the all clear.

Italy has the second most confirmed cases with a total of 17,660 contracting the virus. So far, 1,439 have recovered and 1,266 have died.

Elsewhere, Iran has 12,729 confirmed cases. So far 611 people have died from the virus in Iran. This equates to a mortality rate of 4.8 of diagnosed cases. Some 2,959 people have been given the all clear.

South Korea has 8,086 confirmed cases. 520 people have recovered and 72 people have died. This is a much lower mortality rate of 0.8%.

In Spain, the number of cases is rising rapidly. There have been 1,500 new cases reported in the last day and the country is to launch a nationwide lockdown. Coronavirus has so far infected 5,753 people in Spain, half of them in the capital, Madrid. So far 133 people have died and 193 have recovered.

Germany has 3,758 confirmed cases, with 46 having recovered and 8 people dying.

France has had 3,667 cases so far. Only 12 people have been given the all clear and 79 people have died.

In the US, there are 2,175 confirmed cases, with 47 deaths and 12 people recovering.
