How Liverpool could play key role in Neymar transfer saga

The Neymar transfer saga continues to rumble on with no immediate signs of it changing pace - but Liverpool could now play a pivotal role in the Brazilian's future.

PSG are currently locked in a standoff with their superstar forward, after he made it clear he wishes to rejoin former club Barcelona .

The Spanish giants are yet to make a formal bid, but now it seems that Liverpool could prove decisive in where the 27-year-old will be playing next season.

Mundo Deportivo report that the host city of the European champions will host a summit for members of the European Club Association two weeks before the transfer window closes in France and Spain.

The summit on Friday August 16 is primarily to discuss the potential reforms to the Champions League from 2024, which both PSG and Barca are a key part of.

However this meeting will also give Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi the perfect opportunity to thrash out the terms of a deal for Neymar.

The deadline for transfers in both countries is not until September 2, giving both sides just over a fortnight to agree terms.

It's just two years since Neymar made the switch to Paris in a world record-breaking £198 million transfer.

Neymar has made his intentions clear that he wishes to leave the French champions, but PSG are reluctant to sell.

PSG sporting director Leonardo said previously: "Only one thing is certain today: he is under contract with us for three years.

“And since we have not received an offer, there is nothing to discuss. We have not received any offers. But we have had, it is true, superficial contact [with Barcelona].

“They said they want to buy him but that we are not selling. It was [Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu] who said that.

“But we have not seen that Barcelona are truly in a position to buy him. A move of this magnitude is not just a question of emotions. It is a financial question.

“Neymar can leave PSG, if there is an offer which suits everyone. But up to now, we do not know if anyone wants to buy him, or at what price. It will not be done in a day, that’s for sure.”

Neymar's teammate Marco Verratti has weight in on the situation however, stating that PSG should sell Neymar if he wants to leave.

Verratti said: ""When a player really wants to leave, the club must let him go, according to the conditions set by the club, of course.

"But you must not keep a player who wants to leave. Of course, I would be disappointed to see him go."
