How Lionel Messi and Barcelona can help Tottenham retain Harry Kane amid transfer links

Lionel Messi's contract situation at Barcelona can inadvertently help Tottenham keep hold of their star striker Harry Kane this summer.

Kane's future at Spurs has been in disarray in the last two months - with the England captain making it no secret of his desire to win silverware, something the north Londoners have failed to do in the last 13 years.

The 27-year-old's recent interviews, in which he has heaped praise on Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne have fuelled links to the Citizens, who are looking for a prolific striker that can effectively replace Barcelona-bound Sergio Aguero this summer.

The Catalan giants are, however, enduring a huge financial crisis and must offload several big-name players in an attempt to free up their bloated wage bill and re-sign Argentine frontman Messi.

Messi's contract with the Blaugrana expired at the end of last month but he reportedly wants to stay with Barca, who must first try and trim their wage bill before they can finalise a new deal with the 34-year-old.

One of the star players that the Spanish club are reportedly considering selling is French attacker Antoine Griezmann - who City are interested in signing, according to a report from Fijaches.

If Griezmann was to join Pep Guardiola's side it would likely mean that Kane would remain a Tottenham player this summer, which would be a huge boost for new boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Meanwhile, Spurs' no.10 will lead the line on Sunday night as England take on Roberto Mancini's Italy in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

Kane has netted four times so far for Three Lions this summer and he will need to be on top form if Gareth Southgate's side are to clinch their first major trophy since lifting the World Cup in 1966.
