How ex-Newcastle United defender Kevin Mbabu could make return to Premier League for a bargain fee

Former Newcastle United defender Kevin Mbabu could be set for a dramatic return to the Premier League next summer due to a cut-price exit clause in his contract with BSC Young Boys.

Reports in Germany today have revealed that Mbabu - who left United in 2017 - will be available for just £4.3million.

The defender was sold to BSC Young Boys for a nominal fee two years ago but has impressed so much in his home country he has won a call-up to full Swiss national side.

However, the clutch of interested Premier League sides face a battle with Wolfsburg with sources in Germany claiming he has already started negotiating with the Bundesliga side.

Mbabu opened up last year on his decision to leave Tyneside and said: "The choice of Newcastle was not very good. But it helps me today. Mentally, I was tested enormously.

"I was injured in England for almost two of the three and a half years, and I had muscle problems all the time. Six, seven injuries.

"Physically, my body was not ready for the intensity in Newcastle training.

"I did not have the best lifestyle and was too busy with too many things."

Mbabu did not shut the door on a return to England either, he has previously said: "I enjoyed my stay in Newcastle.

"And England is a special country.

"I hope to play (there) soon, I really would like to return."
