- The Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) has reported that the cost of damages for injuries from e-scooter and e-bike incidents has surpassed £100 million, contributing to increased insurance premiums for motorists.
- Claims submitted to the MIB for micromobility vehicle incidents, which include traumatic brain injuries and complex fractures, rose by 73 per cent between 2023 and 2025.
- MIB is urging for enhanced public education regarding the laws surrounding e-bikes and e-scooters, as a YouGov survey revealed over half of UK adults are unaware that privately owned e-scooters are illegal on public roads.
- Under current UK law, privately owned e-scooters are classified as motor vehicles requiring a driving licence and insurance, neither of which are available for private use, making their use on public roads illegal.
- The Department for Transport plans to consult on e-scooter regulations within the next year, including insurance requirements, and will introduce new offences and tougher penalties for dangerous e-cycling.
