How Ayrshire lockdown tiers could be different this time

Before Christmas last year, lockdown tiers were split by local authorities.

It saw some Ayrshire councils experience tougher restrictions than their neighbours.

When First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced last week that the model would be returning from the last week in April, it was assumed it would be by local authority as it was previously.

But Scotland’s national clinical director Jason Leitch recently revealed that this may not be the case.

Professor Leitch said that the Scottish Government hasn't confirmed the country will move to levels for individual local authorities, and that rules in each tier will be adaptable because of the new variant.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland's Off the Ball show, Prof Leitch said: "What we've said is that all being well, if there's no dramatic change for the better or for the worse, on April 26 Scotland will move back to some form of regional level system.

"We haven't said that it will be individual local authorities and we haven't said everybody will move to level three – some people might move to level two. It may be that by then we can move the whole country to level two or the whole country to level three. We have to wait for the data. The prediction of that is tricky.

"The construct of each level will also be adapted because of the new variant. So we're a little bit worried because nobody has relaxed a lockdown anywhere in the world with the new variant as the dominant virus. So that's why we're cautious in the next nine weeks to get us to that point.

"At that point, hospitality, tourism, stadia, elite sport will all be in the mix for using the headroom we have in the prevalence and the R number."

Ms Sturgeon is due to give a lockdown update to Scottish Parliament later today.
