Houthis designated as terrorist organization, US targets their funding

Retired General Frank McKenzie discusses the reinstatement of the terrorist label for the Houthis.

The recent developments in the Yemen conflict have intensified concerns about regional stability and the impact on international trade. The United States has reinstated the terrorist label for the Houthi rebels in Yemen, recognizing their role as a destabilizing force in the region. This move comes amid escalating tensions between the Houthis and the international community, particularly the US and UK.

Retired four-star General Frank McKenzie, former US Central Command chief and now executive director of the Global and National Security Institute at the University of Florida, believes that the terrorist designation should never have been lifted in the first place. He argues that the Houthi rebels have proven themselves to be a terrorist organization funded and supported by Iran. Reinstating this designation is seen as a timely and useful measure, particularly in limiting the Houthi's ability to move money internationally to fund their activities.

In response to the terrorist designation, the Houthi military spokesperson has declared American and British ships as hostile targets in the region. This rhetoric is not surprising, given the Houthi rebels' long-standing desire to destroy the state of Israel and the United States. General McKenzie emphasizes that it was the Houthis who chose to escalate the conflict by initiating missile strikes, and the international community is simply responding to the need to protect global waterways.

Regarding recent events, General McKenzie voices his concern and sends condolences to the families of two US Navy SEALs who tragically lost their lives. These SEALs were boarding a ship that was suspected of carrying Iranian-supplied weapons and materials for the Houthi rebels. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of Iran's support and resupply of the Houthis, which has been condemned in various UN Security Council resolutions.

General McKenzie suggests that continuing strikes against the Houthi command and control systems, radars, missile launching sites, and assembly facilities are crucial to hampering their capabilities. He advocates for a sustained effort, recognizing that the Houthi rebels have a finite pool of weapons that can be targeted.

Additionally, General McKenzie points out the stark contrast between the humanitarian aid efforts by various countries, including the US, and Iran's role in Yemen. While many nations have provided much-needed humanitarian assistance, Iran has been consistently supplying lethal weaponry to the Houthis.

The reinstatement of the terrorist designation and the ongoing military response indicate a shift in the international community's approach to the Yemen conflict. The focus now is on limiting Houthi capabilities and neutralizing the threat they pose to regional stability, international trade, and humanitarian efforts in Yemen.
