Houseplant of the week: purple passion plant

Gynura aurantiaca

Why will I love it?
Gynura aurantiaca has captivating purple foliage and velvety texture; a low-maintenance houseplant that can elevate a space with its charm.

Light or shade?
It thrives in bright, indirect light, so place it near a window with filtered sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can harm the colourful leaves. If natural light is limited, fluorescent lights can also support its growth.

Where should I put it?
To ensure its wellbeing, it’s best to replicate the plant’s native Indonesian habitat by placing it in a more humid environment.

How do I keep it alive?
Water when the top inch of soil dries out, ensuring proper drainage to prevent root rot. Use a tropical plant potting mix and a pot with drainage holes. Reduce watering in winter. Use a balanced liquid fertiliser every four to six weeks from spring to early autumn, and mist regularly. While it can grow up to a metre tall in its native habitat, it’s manageable as a houseplant with regular pruning.

Did you know …
The purple leaf colour intensifies with age, enhancing its beauty. Some cultures believe the plant possesses medicinal properties, such as aiding digestive issues and reducing inflammation.
