Hot Take: SpongeBob & Patrick Are The Epitome Of Friendship Goals
There have been so many iconic duos peppered throughout history. Ketchup and mustard, Bonnie and Clyde, Ryan Gosling and cereal — but there is one duo that comes out on top for me.
SpongeBob and Patrick. Honestly, they take the cake.
With the fourth instalment, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants, coming to cinemas this Boxing Day, there couldn’t be a better time to run through exactly why these two are everyone’s favourite sponge and starfish combo. You know, for science.
So without further ado, using the show’s iconic acronym for ‘fun’, I will prove to you all that SpongeBob and Patrick are, in fact, the duo of all duos, the epitome of friendship goals, if you will — and I won’t stand for anything less.
F is for friends who do EVERYTHING together
They say that great friendships are born from shared experiences, and SpongeBob and Patrick have quite an impressive adventure resume.
After all, how many people can say that they’ve adopted and raised a baby clam with their best mate?
From using their imagination to annoying their neighbour, Squidward, these two Goofy Goobers are practically inseparable. The pair are forever sharing moments and creating memories together — really putting the ‘ride’ in ‘ride or die’.
Even when the task at hand is as scary as retrieving King Neptune’s crown from Shell City or boarding The Flying Dutchman’s ship, as long as SpongeBob and Patrick are by each other’s side, anything is possible.
That is #bestiegoals for real.
U is for you and me supporting each other, no matter what
As sure as I am that mayonnaise is indeed an instrument, nothing screams ‘friendship’ more than unconditionally supporting your pal. Because at the end of the day, if my bestie came up with the idea, of course I’m going to back them up (even if it’s not a good one).
SpongeBob and Patrick’s willingness to go along with each other’s schemes, no matter what, is the very essence of their dynamic.
The duo’s commitment to the bit is admirable and prominent in the most recent The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants trailer, when Patrick unflinchingly follows his bestie to the treacherous depths of the underworld.
Another example that comes to mind is the classic episode, Something Smells.
When SpongeBob eats a questionable sundae that leaves him with bad breath that makes others run away, Patrick goes out of his way to help SpongeBob overcome his newly found problem by telling him to ‘embrace the ugly’. Sure, he was the one who concluded that SpongeBob was ugly in the first place, but I digress.
SpongeBob’s utmost belief in Patrick’s advice, as well as Patrick’s unshaken acceptance of his ‘ugly’ friend, showcases a bond so strong that it can’t be broken by something as trivially superficial as one’s appearance.
And that, my friends, is enough to make a grown man cry for 20 minutes. No stubbed toe needed.
N is for having time to do anything and at any time at all
SpongeBob and Patrick have been on our screens, showing us what it is to be best friends since 1999. With over two decades worth of giggling, screaming, and catching jellyfish together, it’s truly indisputable that SpongeBob and Patrick hold one of the strongest bonds in pop culture history.
With that kind of longevity, the proof is in the diet Dr Kelp.
SpongeBob and Patrick are always down to do anything together, and that couldn’t ring any truer in their new film, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants.
Boarding The Flying Dutchman’s ship together without a second thought, the two embark on yet another action-packed journey with new and exciting surprises along the way.
With still so many adventures left to share, SpongeBob and Patrick’s bestie legacy is endless and unmatched.
Hitting the big screen on Boxing Day, this new SpongeBob movie is the pièce de résistance of my argument, sure to solidify the pair’s position in the iconic duo hall of fame. You won’t want to miss it.
