Hot air balloons to fly over London for Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Tens of hot air balloons are planned to take flight across London’s horizon in time with the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

As part of the Lord Mayor’s Show this year, balloons will once again grace the sky after being postponed for two years.

The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Vincent Keaveny – who will be flying in one of the balloons with the Lord Mayoress – said he is “delighted” to see the return of the Regatta.

He said: “The awareness and funding that this event raises for The Lord Mayor’s Appeal and its charity partners, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, National Numeracy, Place2Be, OnSide and Samaritans is more important than ever.

“In short, the Regatta – one of the most unique, fun and colourful events of any Mayoralty – is not only raising money to help improve lives, but help save them, too.”

Here’s all you need to know about the balloon pageant.

What is the Lord Mayor’s Hot Air Balloon Regatta?

The event, that last took place in 2019, is an annual aerial extension of the Lord Mayor’s Show. The Lord Mayor’s Hot Air Balloon Regatta has been running since 2015. In 2019, the show raised £76,000 for charity and aims to raise more funds this year.

When will it take place?

Up to 50 hot air balloons will soar across London’s sky, starting from Battersea Park and ending in the east of the capital.

Balloons will take off Sunday June 5 – subject to a good weather forecast.

In 2020 the event was delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic and in 2021 due to bad weather.

Further standby dates have been confirmed by event organisers on June 12 and June 19 2022.

How can I watch?

Balloons should be visible from any vantage point of London’s skyline on the day. Bad weather will not disrupt your view as the event will be rearranged in the event of rain or heavy winds.
