Hospital's specialist unit receives accreditation for patient care

The Regional Eating Disorder Unit at St John’s Hospital has been accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists for high standards in patient care.

The team met all 316 standards, set out by RCP, for the certificate which assures staff, service users and carers of the quality of service being provided by REDU.

Tracey McKigen, services director for Royal Edinburgh and Associated services, said the accreditation was a testament to the enthusiasm and professionalism shown by the team.

She added: “I would like to thank the staff for their dedication and hard work in ensuring high quality patient care and congratulate them on receiving this accreditation as an acknowledgment of that.”

Established in 2012, REDU is a specialist inpatient unit for people over 18 with severe eating disorders.

Patients are supported to recover by a highly experienced multidisciplinary team offering a blended and comprehensive approach of nursing, medical, occupational, physical, psychological and dietetic therapies.

Laura Cumming, senior charge nurse, said: “I’m extremely proud of the team and the service we provide. Patients and carers were asked to participate in the process and it was so helpful to hear their feedback.

“As a staff team we were able to reflect on the service we provide to our vulnerable patients and to recognise areas of good practice, ensuring we are in line with evidence base.”

The RCP Quality Network for Eating Disorders works with inpatient services to assure and improve the quality of services treating people with eating disorders.

Through a comprehensive process of review, it identifies and acknowledges high standards of organisation and patient care.

Hazel Elliott, REDU dietitian said: “Being part of the accreditation process gives us the opportunity to hear about areas of good practice and share our own experiences with other eating disorders services.”

The accreditation has been awarded until June 2021.
