Horses die after being hit by vehicle on A77 near Kilmarnock

Two horses have died after they were hit by a vehicle on a busy road into Glasgow.

As reported on Glasgow Live, there were massive tailbacks into the city from East Ayrshire this morning, following the incident next to the A77 near Kilmarnock.

Police Scotland confirmed they were called to the scene, near to the Meiklewood Interchange between Fenwick and Kilmarnock, at around 5.30am this morning (Wednesday) after receiving reports of the horses being loose at the side of the road.

Domestic abuser disabled smoke alarms and tried to set toaster on fire in brutal attack on partner

Both animals died from their injuries but the driver of the vehicle involved was not injured.

A northbound section of the A77 was closed for almost two hours and traffic was queued for up to 40 minutes at the peak of the disruption -  from the B7038 Glasgow Road to Junction 8 on the M77, with congestion reported back to the Bellfield Interchange.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Police were called around 5.25am on Wednesday morning to the A77 northbound at junction eight after a car struck two horses that had got loose from their field.

"An ambulance attended and checked over the driver of the car who was badly shaken, but not injured.

"Both horses died from their injuries."
