Horror crash on M77 sees man rushed to hospital after ploughing through barrier

A man was rushed to hospital after his car ploughed through a barrier and ended up on a ditch in a horror crash on the M77.

Emergency services raced to the one vehicle accident near junction 4 of the motorway near the exit for Waitrose in Newton Mearns at around 10.55am yesterday morning.

Pictures from the scene show the barrier at the hard shoulder completely flattened after the man careered into a ditch.

Around a dozen police and ambulance staff attended before the smashed car was pulled out by 911 recovery crews.

The man was taken to hospital with injuries that cops say 'do not appear to be life threatening'.

A local who lives in the flats close to the busy motorway said: "Part of the barrier was completely lowered after a car went off the road and right through it.

"Where that is there is a big ravine and about a 30-50 feet drop which leads down to the Darnley Dams, so it's very serious.

"The 911 recovery staff arrived and lifted the vehicle out. I just hope that anyone that was in the car is okay because the car is clearly a write off. It's absolutely wrecked."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police were called around 10.55am on Saturday, February 6, following the report of a one vehicle road crash on the M77 near junction 4, Newton Mearns.

"Officers attended and one man was taken to hospital with injuries that do not appear to be life threatening. The road was cleared around 12.25pm."
