Hopes for 'something different' to replace closed down Argos in Bulwell

Shoppers have shared their visions for the future of a site previously used by a major retailer.

The Argos off Holborn Place, Bulwell was closed in 2020, as part of the company's plans to close a number of standalone shops across the UK.

And now Bulwell residents have spoken on what they would like the sizeable empty plot to be replaced with.

Retired couple Mary Wood, 60, and Lloyd Wood, 70, said that the site should be filled with something that would improve the area.

Mrs Wood said: "It is shame that Argos went and it needs to be used by somebody.

"The best thing would probably be a large freezer food shop, because there is a lot of poverty in Bulwell and I think that would help people - there was a big one and it was popular but now they are smaller shops.

"A Farmfoods or something like that would probably be well used. Bulwell has changed a lot, we're born and bred here, this area could do with another shop."

Mr Wood added: "Something a bit different would be good too - either that or a large store that would be useful for anyone.

"It's too big of a shop to be left shuttered up and be sprayed with paint."

After the shop was shut, Argos redirected customers in Bulwell to the store at the Sainsbury's on Perry Road, Sherwood.

This is a part of an ongoing strategy by the company to reduce the number of standalone Argos stores while opening more collection points and Argos stores within Sainsbury’s, which had previously led to the closure of its store at the Victoria Retail Park in Netherfield.

Shane York, 26, who is training as an apprentice and lives in Bulwell, said: "It should be a pet shop, there's not a pet store since the one near to Tesco's went.

"I've got two cats and it would be good to not have to go to a supermarket and have a proper shop where you can get a range of stuff."

Gary York, 30, who works for DHL and is a Bulwell resident, added: "A pet shop or maybe a big clothes shop would work I think.

"There's not a lot of choice when it comes to men's clothes shops in Bulwell."

Argos recently applied for planning permission to carry out maintenance on some of the trees around their now empty site, after a tree fell and had to be removed.

A long-time resident of Bulwell, who asked not to be named, said: "Anything would be good really, I was having this conversation with my daughter actually about what it should be replaced with.

"It's a good location for a lot of shops, maybe it could be a clothes shop. There's lots of parking and it's a big space.

"One of my sons said that it could be a gym, because I don't think there really is one in the town. Anything different would be welcome I think."
