'Hope is a great thing': 95yo in recovery from COVID-19 after five weeks

Vic Cornell returned two negative tests for COVID-19 after five weeks in isolation at Maroondah hospital.

A 95-year-old man who was hospitalised with COVID-19 is now out of isolation after returning two negative tests.

Vic Cornell said while he no longer had the virus, it has left its mark.

"Some days I am better than others," Mr Cornell told ABC Radio Melbourne's Drive program.

"I've overcome [the coronavirus symptoms] slowly — hope is a great thing."

Elderly people have the highest risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

People aged over 90 account for nearly 30 per cent of all coronavirus deaths in Australia.

Mr Cornell remains in hospital at Healesville after he fell and broke his hip while exercising.

"It's very sore, but it'll get better," he said.

"The hospital is very good, I can't speak too highly of them."

After spending five weeks in isolation, Mr Cornell was grateful to be reunited with his partner Jean — who was also in hospital at Healesville after recovering from COVID-19.

"It's not much fun being on your own," he said.

The pair were looking forward to returning home when they are well enough.

Family 'lucky'

Mr Cornell's son Russell said the family knew Vic was sounding better, but getting the negative test result confirmed his health was improving.

"A few weeks ago I didn't think he was going to make it," Russell Cornell said.

"It is really incredible to see how he is now."

The time Vic spent in isolation was incredibly tough for the family.

"You feel quite helpless," Russell said.

Due to visitor restrictions, Mr Cornell was yet to see his dad, but said the family were grateful they were able to call Vic every day.

"We are lucky — it just goes to show what a great fighter he is," Russell said.
