- The Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX electric crossovers gained access to the Tesla Supercharger network today.
- Owners will need a manufacturer-approved charging adapter and the Tesla app to top up at one of the 23,500 compatible Superchargers.
- Further down the line, Tesla Superchargers will be integrated into the HondaLink and Acura EV apps.
Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX owners can now use over 23,500 Tesla Superchargers to recharge their EVs after the automakers gained access to Tesla’s expansive DC fast charging network.
Honda and Acura are the latest non-Tesla car brands to get the green light to use Tesla’s Supercharger network in the United States, after many others, including Rivian, General Motors, Ford, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai.
Like most other non-Tesla EVs out there that can use Superchargers, the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX will need a manufacturer-approved NACS to CCS1 charging adapter to use Tesla’s dispensers. That’s because the two General Motors-based EVs come with a CCS1 charging port from the factory, while the vast majority of Superchargers in North America have a Tesla-designed NACS plug.
The only DC fast charging adapter approved by Honda can be bought for $225 at Honda and Acura dealers, as well as on the Honda DreamShop website. It’s worth noting that third-party adapters are also available, but remember that if anything goes wrong while charging with one, automakers might not honor the car’s warranty.
"Planning a road trip just got a lot easier for our Honda and Acura EV owners with access to the Tesla Supercharger network," said Ryan Harty, assistant vice president of Sustainability & Business Development at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Combined with other growing charging networks, Honda and Acura EV drivers now have added peace of mind with a wider range of dependable DC fast charging options nationwide."
To use a compatible Supercharger, Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX drivers will need to use the Tesla smartphone app to initiate a charging session and pay. That’s a bit of a pain, but the companies said that they’re already working on integrating Superchargers into their own apps to eliminate the need for the Tesla app.
