Before filming Ryan Murphy’s newest drama series, The Shards, it was imperative that stars Homer Gere and Kaia Gerber acknowledge their parents, Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford’s shared history.
Richard, 76, and Cindy, 60, were famously married from 1991 to 1995. The two have since remarried and welcomed children, separately.
The Pretty Woman star is currently married to his third wife, Alejandra Silva, with whom he shares two young sons, James and Alexander. He was previously married to Carey Lowell, with whom he shares his eldest son, 26-year-old Homer. Meanwhile, Cindy has been married to her second husband, Rande Gerber, since 1998. The two share Kaia, 24, and son Presley, 27.
Despite their parents’ previous romantic relationship, Homer and Kaia only recently met for the first time ahead of production on the FX thriller series The Shards, adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’s best-selling 2023 novel of the same name.
Recalling their first meeting in a new interview with Vogue, Homer revealed: “Twenty minutes into knowing each other, I was like, ‘Should we just acknowledge the fact that our parents were married?’ She was like, ‘Yeah. Cool.’ And that was it.”
Kaia and Homer co-star in The Shards, a seductive drama series set in 1980s Los Angeles about a group of prep school classmates, whose privileged world of wealth and parties begins to unravel with the arrival of a new student and a serial killer targeting teenagers.
The series also stars Hayes Warner, Igby Rigney, Wes Bentley and Evan Rachel Wood.
The show marks Homer’s second major TV role, following his portrayal of Dylan Reid in Euphoria’s third and final season, while it lands as Kaia’s third collaboration with Murphy. She has starred in season 10 of American Horror Story and its 2021 spin-off American Horror Stories.
Kaia, who first started her career as a fashion model, previously addressed her status as a nepo baby. The controversial title is often given to children of celebrities, whose parents’ famous names and glittering showbiz connections have helped them either become celebrities themselves, or become very successful in a related career.
“I won’t deny the privilege that I have,” she told Elle in 2023. “Even if it’s just the fact that I have a really great source of information and someone to give me great advice, that alone I feel very fortunate for.
“My mom always joked: ‘If I could call and book a Chanel campaign, it would be for me and not you,’” Kaia added. “But I also have met amazing people through my mom whom I now get to work with.”
New episodes of The Shards premiere Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Hulu and FX, with the finale airing September 9.
