Homeless woman 'mauled to death by three pit bulls' in supermarket car park

The body of a woman found dead in Costco car park shows she was mauled by three dogs, according to police.

The woman was found in the car park of the wholesale supermarket early on Sunday.

It is not clear if the mauling by the pack of dogs is what killed her, police in Los Angeles have said.

The woman has not been identified but had been homeless and was in her late 30s or early 40s.

An investigation into the death is ongoing.

Bakersfield police Sgt. Nathan McCauley said: “We’re not sure if the dogs caused her death or if she had another medical issue."

The altercation between the woman and the dogs likely began at an industrial yard near the warehouse store and ended in the parking lot based on paw prints and other evidence at the scene, McCauley said.

Two of the dogs involved in the attack — a pit bull terrier and a mixed breed — belonged to a nearby business owner. The third dog, a pit bull terrier, was a stray.

One of the dogs has already been euthanised, and the rest are scheduled to be killed, McCauley said.

“It’s a very unusual occurrence, and without any witnesses or surveillance video, it’s hard to know exactly what caused this,” he said.

The death follows a fatal shooting at a different Costco stores in California.

On Friday night, Kenneth French, 32, was shot dead at a Costco in Corona, about 47 miles from Los Angeles. French, whom family members described as mentally challenged and nonverbal, allegedly assaulted an off-duty police officer who then shot him.
