Homeless man dies in hostel days before moving into his own home

A well-loved homeless man has died just before he was about to move into his own home.

Christopher Baker, known as 'Pops', was a well-known and well-liked member of Bristol's community and his death has left people shocked and saddened.

Mr Baker was a rough sleeper but was staying at Riverside, a homeless hostel in Jamaica Street near Bristol city centre, while he was preparing to move into his own home.

A member of the Riverside team found Mr Baker dead in his room on June 7. The organisation said there were "no suspicious circumstances".

Riverside said: "We are all shocked and saddened at the death of Christopher Baker and would like to convey our condolences to his family and friends.

“Christopher only came to Jamaica Street just over a week ago and was about to move on in to his own home. He was found in his room by a member of our team and there are no suspicious circumstances."

Avon and Somerset Police are now investigating with support from Riverside, and an inquest into Mr Baker's death will be opened in the coming weeks at Avon Coroner's Court.

In December last year, Bristol Live reported at least 61 people have died while being homeless in Bristol in the past five years.

Reporting these deaths, and importantly the stories of those who died, is important in order for institutions and the public to learn lessons from what went wrong.

Bristol Live is still joined with journalists across the country, initially co-ordinated by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, who are doing their best to make sure the deaths of homeless people do not go unnoticed.

Many around Bristol see the need to commemorate those who have died while living on the streets. In recent months, someone has taken to placing makeshift headstones around the city in the area a homeless person died.

The headstone includes the person's details including the words "He was homeless. Remember him."
