A speechwriter for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been linked to a series of online posts and recordings containing extremist rhetoric and hate speech, prompting the agency to respond by sending reporters a link to the First Amendment. The content, attributed to Eric Lendrum, was first reported by Notus.
Lendrum, who joined DHS in March 2025 after earlier stints at the Department of the Interior, maintained a substantial online presence in the years between government roles., Notus explained. Among his most controversial posts are a 2021 blog claiming that "American conservatives are, right now, on a course for being every bit as ostracized and alienated from broader society as Jews were in the years leading up to Nazi Germany."
The report also highlights several passages from his podcast "The Right Take," in which Lendrum, among other things, described the January 6 rioters as patriots and said he found it "gratifying" to see members of Congress "crouching under their chairs, putting on those stupid, like, bubble masks,".
He also used his podcast to endorse the racist "great replacement theory," telling listeners that the notion that immigration is being used to wipe out white people was "real" and "already being put into effect in some European cities.
His social media activity also included calls for violence. The Guardian shared a since-deleted post in which Lendrum shared a video of pro-Palestinian demonstrators and wrote: "Cars are bigger and heavier than any one of these freaks. All it takes is one brave driver to do what needs to be done."
Notus also reported a post in which Lendrum called on the U.S. to treat immigrants as if they were enemy combatants:
"They are not migrants. They are not 'undocumented.' They are an invading army. The largest invasion in American history. And what are you supposed to do with an invading army? Crush it, by any means necessary. That's the #AmericaFirst way."
He also repeatedly referred to transgender people as "freaks," "child molesters," and in one podcast episode declared: "We need to eradicate transgenderism. Wipe it off the face of the Earth."
When asked about his social media history, DHS did not comment on its vetting process. In response to specific questions from Notus, the agency replied only by sharing a link to the text of the First Amendment, which protects free speech.
