Holywood Trust and Kirkcudbright Rotary Club come together to ensure Riding for the Disabled lessons continue

The Holywood Trust and Kirkcudbright Rotary Club have come together to ensure youngsters in the area can continue with their Riding for the Disabled lessons.

The trust has given the club £2,000 to hire horses for pupils from Kirkcudbright Academy and its five partner primary schools so they can attend Galloway RDA sessions.

The club will administer the fund, with the schools responsible for transport arrangements to and from Barstobrick at Ringford.

The support comes on the back of the club making a substantial financial contribution towards the cost of installing a hoist at Barstobrick and they now provide one volunteer each week to walk horses during the riding lessons.

Club president, Alex Kinnell, said; “I fully appreciate the financial assistance the club receive from the Holywood Trust in order to allow us to carry on with our work in supporting this wonderful cause.”

At the cheque presentation, Galloway RDA chairman Patricia Keith and treasurer Sue Cooper thanked the club and the trust for their support, adding: “The funding will be a huge benefit to the children from schools within the Kirkcudbright area and will allow the children to continue riding lessons with Galloway RDA for the foreseeable future.”

Kirkcudbright Primary headteacher, David Stevens, added: “Thank you for your continued support with the Riding for the Disabled sessions.

“The pupils we send really enjoy the sessions and it is particularly nice to hear about them laughing and enjoying the experience.

“To be able to provide a wider curriculum is so important to some of our pupils who cannot always readily access the usual curriculum.

“It gives a life experience that we believe has huge benefits for the pupils who attend and one which we cannot provide in school.”
