Hollywood star 'reducing waste' by wearing same tuxedo to award bashes - but fans don't buy it

A Hollywood actor who is 'reducing waste' by re-wearing the same tuxedo this awards season has been ridiculed online.

British designer Stella McCartney revealed that Joaquin Phoenix has chosen to wear his custom tuxedo to every ceremony he attends this year.

The American film star, who won the best actor in a drama prize for Joker at the Golden Globes this week, is a lifelong vegan and has spoken out about the climate crisis on a number of occasions.

Stella, a known advocate of 'sustainable fashion', gushed over the star describing him as 'a winner' - but her fans were left a little baffled.

She tweeted: "This man is a winner… wearing custom Stella because he chooses to make choices for the future of the planet. He has also chosen to wear this same Tux for the entire award season to reduce waste. I am proud to join forces with you."

"Is this a parody?" one person replied.

Her fans couldn't quite get on board with the 'planet saving' move with many suggesting it was exactly the kind of Hollywood hypocrisy Ricky Gervais poked fun at with his Golden Globes opening monologue.

"I can literally feel the planet cooling as I read this," one sarcastic individual quipped.

Another commented: "Not all heroes wear capes. But the ones who do wear the same cape all awards season."

One joked: "Just go ahead and hand him the Nobel Peace Prize already. Bravo Joaquin."

"Stunning and brave," another wrote.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided to ditch the meat this year when stars attending the Golden Globes were served a fully-vegan meal for the first time.

Joaquin praised the controversial move in his acceptance speech as he picked up his prize.

"Thank you for recognising the link between animal agriculture and climate change," he said.

"It was a bold move making tonight plant-based and sends a powerful message."

He went on to encourage the celebrity guests to "make changes in our own life", telling them: "we don't have to take private jets to Palm Springs to the awards sometimes".
