Holly Willoughby hit out at Prince Charles' biographer Tom Bower as she dubbed his remarks about Meghan Markle "dangerous".
The historian appeared on This Morning and slammed the Duchess of Sussex over her interview with Oprah Winfrey and claimed that Meghan had essentially expected to wed a Kardashian.
He also suggested that Meghan had gone into a depression after getting "a terrible shock" that she would no longer remain a celebrity and blasted Meghan for "pouring copious amounts of bile on the monarchy".
Appearing on This Morning alongside fellow historian Kate Williams, who put her head in her hands over the remarks, Tom insisted that Meghan wasn't naive when going into marrying Harry.
He told Holly and Phil: "I don't think she was naive, I think she went into it with her eyes wide open. And I think she didn't want - probably - to serve and be silent. Well, that's the job of the Royal Family, they're not there to campaign.
"I think that in the end, the baby shower that she had in New York for half a million dollars set the seal. She wanted to remain a celebrity, she probably thought she was marrying the Kardashians, not the Windsors, and got a terrible shock and went into a depression."
At this point, Kate put a hand on her head and Tom continued: "I just think that the interview raised so many more questions about her than about the Royal Family. I find it very hard-"
Holly interrupted, clearly vexed by his comments: "Can I just say, when you say that about her, what are you basing that on? Saying that she'd rather be married into the Kardashians. Isn't that - it's your opinion and, seeing what we've seen recently and what she's said from her own mouth - isn't it a dangerous one?"
"On the contrary," Tom replied. "I think what we've seen from her own mouth is a woman who's spent a long time preparing for this performance and pouring copious amounts of bile on the monarchy and on a 94-year-old woman she knows can't answer back."
And viewers were similarly unimpressed by the remarks, with one tweeting: "This man on @ThisMorning Showing his true colours! I can't believe the nonsense that is coming out of his mouth. Correction! I can believe it, as many of his generation think & talk in the same way. It's just shocking hearing it on prime time TV #ThisMorning."
While another fumed: "Tom Bower just said that he disbelieves everything that Meghan says. He disbelieves the conversation about Archie’s skin tone. He says that Meghan thought she was marrying into the Kardashians. Well done for giving this odious man airtime. #ThisMorning."
A third raged: "@ITV need to start adhering to their “Get talking” and helping people with mental health campaign and stop getting people on who scoff at Meghan Markle who said she was having suicidal thoughts. It’s absolutely disgusting #ThisMorning."
"#ThisMorning need to get this bloke off. Disgusting viewing right now. We get it, you love the Royal family, doesn’t mean they’re immune to criticism you imbecile. Get him off," another seethed.
