HMV store at Cribbs Causeway could be closing

HMV in Cribbs Causeway looks like it's set to close for the second time in the space of one year.

The retail group's store in The Mall had a turbulent 2019, closing in February before reopening just three months later.

Fans of the store were delighted at the reopening, which was announced on its social media pages.

However fast forward eight months and it looks like the shop could be on the verge of closure once again, as it is one of 10 in the UK subject to negotiations.

Shoppers have also reported seeing signs advertising a closing down sale at the unit.

This week the Stoke Sentinel reported three stores will shut at the end of the month, with new tenants already lined up to move into the properties.

Bristol Live contacted HMV for a response on Wednesday (January 8) but had not received a reply by the time of writing.

The 10 stores which are subject to negotiations are Birmingham Bullring, Leeds Headrow, Bristol Cribbs, Edinburgh Ocean Terminal, Glasgow Braehead, Grimsby, Merryhill, Reading, Sheffield Meadowhall and Worcester.

Speaking to the Stoke Sentinel, a HMV spokesman said: "There are currently 10 stores where negotiations with landlords are ongoing and we are hopeful of securing new deals.

"The closures are no reflection on our superb staff and, where we are not able to come to a new agreement or relocate staff within the business elsewhere, unfortunately this does mean some of our staff will lose their jobs."

HMV launched with its first store in 1921, when composer Sir Edward Elgar was among those to celebrate its arrival.

But following a challenging period it collapsed into administration in December 2018 for the second time in just six years, putting more than 2,300 jobs at risk.

The company had previously fallen into administration in 2013, but was rescued when it was bought by Hilco UK.
