HMP Northumberland prisoner brought down after 10-hour rooftop stand-off

A rooftop protest at HMP Northumberland ended after more than 10 hours.

The unnamed criminal scaled a houseblock at the privately-run prison on Saturday afternoon.

It is understood the reasons behind the protest were "personal" and not linked to Covid-19.

Previously, concerns have been raised about the disease spreading inside the Acklington jail due to a lack of soap.

The inmate made his way onto the roof at around 2pm before staff spent hours pleading for him to come down.

He did so safely at 12.15am. Nobody was injured.

“A prisoner gained access to the roof of one of the Houseblocks at HMP Northumberland in the early afternoon of Saturday 6th June," confirmed a spokesperson for the prison's operator Sodexo.

"Our primary concern was for his safety and wellbeing, given the height of the roof and we are very pleased to say that he was brought down safely shortly after midnight.

"This successful conclusion to a dangerous situation was down to the teamwork and professionalism of specially trained personnel from Sodexo, HM Prison and Probation Service, Fire and Rescue and Ambulance services.

"We are extremely grateful for their support. ”

The Category C jail, which holds almost 1,400 prisoners, has previously been blighted by violence and drugs.

However a recent report found improvements had been made with the prison even employing a 'violence reduction manager' in a bid to curb trouble.
