Hit and miss Malaysian food at Chapel Allerton restaurant

Malaysian food is world-renowned for being aromatic and spicy, and while some of the dishes at this Chapel Allerton haunt hit the spot, others were simply lacking a little bit of oomph.

Dapur Malaysia opened to great fanfare in summer 2019 and it's slap-bang in the middle of the affluent north-Leeds suburb, opposite The Mustard Pot.

Customers are greeted by artwork of a street food stall as soon as they walk in and the menu is packed full of dishes that people will recognise if they've followed the well-trodden South East Asian tourist circuit.

However, it's very much hit and miss in terms of quality.

Let's start with the positives. The chicken rendang was bursting full of fresh spices and creamy coconut, with the kaffir lime leaves giving it a real lift.

The other main courses were a tad disappointing though.

The mee hoon goreng was just simply bland and although the tofu in the mamak fried noodles was full of flavour, it also lacked a little bit of pizzazz.

I can't help but feel that Dapur Malaysia is very close to being a great restaurant - and the service was superb all evening - but some of the dishes just need something extra to make customers come back time and time again.
