Historic Edinburgh album with first portraits of capital sells for £85,000 at auction

A mesmerising photo album which features some of the earliest portraits of Edinburgh has been sold at auction for a whopping £85,000.

The album fetched 20 times more than it was estimated to after going under the hammer at Lyle & Turnbull on Wednesday September 28. It was estimated to sell for only £4,000.

Photographs taken by Charles George Hood Kinnear, who was born in Kinloch Fife, feature within the newly discovered collection. Kinnear, who died in 1894 and was considered to be a pioneering photographer and architect, is believed to have taken the salt prints.

Kinnear is renowned for being a founding member of the Photographic Society of Scotland which was set up in 1856. This happened in the same year that he entered a partnership with Edinburgh architect, John Dick Peddie.

Peddie & Kinnear became one of Scotland's most well-known architectural firms of its day.

It was responsible for designing much of modern Edinburgh, including the iconic Cockburn Street.

The album belonged to the family of Kinloch House.

Rare books, manuscripts and maps specialist, Dominic Somerville-Brown, said: "There is always great anticipation on the day of a sale and we knew that the items being auctioned would attract a great deal of interest.

"That said, one can never know just how much interest there will be, nor just how much people will be prepared to pay to own a piece of history."
