Hillsborough 30 years on - how Liverpool has and WILL remember the fans who never came home

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster - when 96 Liverpool fans went to a football match and never came home.

The city will come to a standstill at 3.06pm this afternoon, the time the ill-fated FA Cup semi-final was halted in Sheffield, and stop for a period of silence.

The main focus for the anniversary commemorations will be at St George’s Hall, where banners bearing the faces of those who died have been hung.

One family member described it as a "beautiful gesture" from Liverpool council.

Also at St George's Hall, 96 candles will be lit, while on the banners are the words "Never Forgotten", to be displayed until Thursday.

Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, and Lord Mayor, Cllr Christine Banks, will lay wreaths on behalf of the people of the city at 10.30am, today.

In a series of similar tributes, the city as a whole is set to fall silent, with traffic stopped in both Mersey Tunnels, the bells of Liverpool town hall tolling 96 times and flags on civic buildings flown at half mast.

The Mersey Ferries will sound their horns to mark the 30th anniversary, while other organisations taking part in the silence include National Museums Liverpool, Tate Liverpool and Liverpool ONE and Liverpool Bid Company.

A public service will be held at the Anglican Cathedral at 2.45pm.

Liverpool Football Club will be opening the Kop for anyone who wishes to go to Anfield to mark the anniversary.

The Anfield retail store will close from 1pm and other LFC stores will cease trading temporarily so both staff and customers can pay their respects.

At the stadium, flags will be flown at half-mast, the last stadium tour will commence at 11am and there will be no access to the museum after 2pm.

Mayor Anderson said: “[Today] we remember the 30th anniversary of Hillsborough and the death of the 96 fans who died.

Elsewhere, St Bride’s Church, on Percy Street in Liverpool city centre, is hosting a vigil for those who wish to pay their respects between 6pm and 7pm.

Lay worship leader Rose Green said: "We wanted to mark the 30th anniversary of the disaster but are conscious of the sensitivities around the ongoing prosecutions.

"We therefore felt that a prayer vigil would be the most appropriate way forward."

Yesterday, at Anfield, Chelsea paid their respects by laying a wreath at the Hillsborough memorial on behalf of the club.

Writing inside it, Liverpool's manager Jurgen Klopp said: "Even if I was writing in German I do not think I would have the words to appropriately serve this situation.

On Sunday, fans in both the Kop and the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand revealed special "96" and "30 years" mosaics. Both teams wore black armbands as a mark of respect, and tributes were displayed on LED boards surrounding the pitch.

The Kop displayed a mosaic showing the number 96 flanked either side by the eternal flames.

To the right, the Sir Kenny Dalglish stand spelt out "30 years" across the entirety of the lower tier.

Margaret Aspinall, the chairwoman of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, whose son James, 18, died at Hillsborough, spoke previously about today's commemorations, and said: "We can’t thank the supporters [enough].

"Not just the supporters, but the city as a whole, for all the support we have had over all the years.

"And I do understand it’s a very important time [for them].

"On April 15, it’s obviously very important, in the 30th year, [to remember] the deaths of the 96 and so many people who were injured.

"But under circumstances that are no fault of our own, we have to be very, very careful.

"But I’d like to thank all the supporters for what they have done over the years, in supporting the families, and especially the survivors, who are still suffering to this day.
