Highland High School goes up in flames as images show horror blaze gutting building

A high school could be totally destroyed by fire after an explosion as horror images show the blaze gutting the building.

Fire crews are battling the blaze at Highland High School in Pocatello, Idaho. The fire was first reported at around 4am on Friday, April 21, amid snowfall.

When crews arrived they reportedly found flames on the roof of the D building at the school.

A statement from Pocatello Fire Department said: "Crews are on scene at Highland High School working on a structure fire.

"Call came in at 3.57am, upon arrival crews found flames showing over the D building.

"Crews have been actively working the fire and keeping it contained to the one building.

"We have been assisted by Chubbuck Fire and Pocatello Police.

"Once the fire is out the fire investigation will begin."

Authorities are yet to confirm the cause of the fire.

The flames have reportedly caused part of the roof and some walls to collapse, as well as some explosions inside the school.

Fire crews from Pocatello, Chubbuck and Bannock County are reportedly also working on the fire, trying to keep it contained to one building.

The Pocatello Police Department have said: "The Fire Department is working to extinguish the Highland High School fire. We ask that people stay away and all the first responders room to work."

Video from the scene shows flames engulfing the roof ot the building with smoke billowing into the sky.

Other footage from the scene shows the school campus engulfed in thick smoke as fire crews remain to ensure the fire does not spread.

There are currently no reports of any injuries as a result of the fire.

People are being warned to stay away from the area until the fire has been extinguished. Road around Highland school have been closed as a result of the fire.

The Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 said: "Highland High School classes are cancelled today. More information to follow.

"Officials will be working today and throughout the weekend on-site, please refrain from being at or around the area."

Officials have told local news outlet KPVI there was reportedly some kind of explosion at the school.

The school has around 1,500 students, making it one of the largest in Idaho.
