High-Sodium Canned Soups: A Health Risk In Disguise

Cans of Campbell's Soup are displayed in a supermarket in New York

When it comes to convenient meal options, canned soups are a popular choice for many consumers. They offer a quick and easy solution for busy days, with the added benefit of a long shelf life. However, the convenience of canned soups often comes at a cost, particularly in the form of high sodium content.

While sodium is necessary for the body in small amounts, excessive consumption can lead to various health issues such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, osteoporosis, and kidney disease. To maintain a healthy diet, it is recommended to limit daily sodium intake to no more than 2,300 milligrams per day by the FDA, and even stricter limits of 1,500 milligrams by the American Heart Association.

Many popular canned soup brands pack their products with sodium as a preservative, resulting in some soups containing over 1,500 milligrams of sodium per serving. To help consumers make informed choices, a list of 25 high-sodium canned soups has been compiled, ranging from least to most sodium per serving.

For example, Simple Truth Cream of Mushroom Condensed Soup contains 660 milligrams of sodium per 1/2-cup serving, while Progresso Rich & Hearty Italian Sausage and Potato Soup has 680 milligrams per cup. Other notable mentions include Campbell's Chunky Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup with 790 milligrams per cup and Progresso Broccoli Cheese with Bacon Soup with 800 milligrams per cup.

It's important for consumers to be mindful of their sodium intake, especially when opting for canned soups as a meal choice. While these soups may offer convenience, they can also contribute significantly to daily sodium levels. By being aware of the sodium content in canned soups and choosing lower-sodium options when possible, individuals can better manage their overall health and well-being.
