Hibs midfielder makes training return after illness as Josh Doig set for comeback at St Johnstone

Kyle Magennis has returned to training with Hibernian after a period out with illness, but is not expected to make an instant return to first team action.

The 22-year-old has struggled with a series of injuries since arriving at Easter Road from St Mirren in the summer and has been restricted to just nine league appearances this season.

The former Buddies captain - who netted his first goal for the Leith outfit in December’s draw with Dundee United - last appeared as a second half substitute in the win over Aberdeen last month but has not started a match since before Christmas.

Manager Jack Ross admitted in his Friday press conference that he was unlikely to feature in the visit to St Johnstone this weekend as the men in green and white look to put defeat to Motherwell in their last outing behind them.

The Easter Road side will have teenage full back Josh Doig available after he missed out on capping his new long-term contract at the club with his 25th senior appearance.

Fellow youngster Josh O’Connor - son of former Hibs favourite Garry - also trained with the first team on Friday as he continues his recovery from injury.

Opponents St Johnstone, who lifted the Betfred Cup for the first time in their history last weekend, could be without matchwinner Shaun Rooney for the visit of Europa League chasing Hibs.

Rooney scored when the Perth side blew the men in green and white away in the semi-final of the competition at Hampden in January, but has been suffering with a knee issue picked up in Wednesday’s draw at Hamilton.

Callum Davidsomn will also face a sweat over Murray Davidson, Ali McCann and Chris Kane - all of whom face late fitness tests before kick off at McDiarmid Park.
