Hibs and Hearts fan return update as Professor Leitch says things are heading in right direction

There remains hope that fans could return to football matches in Scotland in the autumn, with national clinical director Professor Jason Leitch saying that things are "pointing in a good direction".

Professor Leitch told the BBC Off the Ball programme that no date has been set for a fan return, but reduced-capacity crowds could possibly attend test events in the autumn time.

He said there are a number of factors which need to be considered before a decision is made, with continued progress against COVID-19 required.

Professor Leitch indicated that should they not see a fresh spike following the reopening of pubs, that would add weight to the argument that crowds could be allowed in sooner rather than later.

He said: “We’ve not set a date. We are very hopeful that in the autumn some time we will be able to run some test events and get crowds back, we want to be able to do that.

“If the numbers stay the way they are then that’s the best way of getting there.

“If pubs opening doesn’t give us big numbers then crowds are much more likely.

“Nothing changes our view that August 1 we can get back to playing. Some things would worry us - for example if there were a lot of positive tests in a team. If the bubble had burst.

“There’s been no inference of that and there’s not been a big increase in community transmission around the country.

“So far everything is pointing in a good direction.”

Hibs will return to competitive action when they face Kilmarnock in their Scottish Premiership opener at Easter Road on Saturday, 1 August.

As things stand Hearts will have to wait until October before getting back on the pitch with the Championship season set to start in the autumn.

In England "pilot" events could start next month with fans able to return to grounds in October should everything go to plan.
