HGV smashes into house causing serious damage

A lorry smashed into a home - causing significant damage. Emergency crews were called to Banwell on Monday, May 23 at around 5pm after reports an HGV had hit a building in West Street.

Crews from Winscombe Fire Station attended and cordoned off the road before police arrived. Structural engineers and engineers from Western Power Distribution were also on the scene, reports Somerset Live.

A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: “At approximately 5pm yesterday, one on-call crew from Winscombe fire station was called to reports of a road traffic collision involving an HGV and a building on West Street in Banwell.

“On arrival, firefighters found a lorry had struck a building. The crew cordoned off the area and handed the incident over to the police who remained in attendance until the electricity board and structural engineer arrived.”

This is the second time this month that a lorry has hit a building in the village. Emergency crews were called on May 6 after an Asda delivery van ploughed into Castle Hill Cottage at the junction of narrow Castle Hill with East Street, West Street and the High Street.

The collision cut off power supplies to dozens of properties in the village.
