Heroes to spread some Christmas spirit at Wallsend on Thursday night

Festive Fantasy: Heroes, anti-heroes, robots, a dinosaur and a ghost at Heroes and More at Wallsend.

All the superheroes are gathering.

They're here to save us all from a consumer-mad Christmas fraying our nerves and scrambling our brains.

Well, not quite.

But they probably will save you from any pre-holiday bouts of cynicism and Scrooge McDuckery by spreading some joy, goodwill and Christmas spirit.

You can get a photo with them at Heroes and More at Wallsend on Thursday night.

Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Spider-Man, Belle and Predator will all be there, along with Santa Claus.

Is Santa a hero, though? Yes, according to hero.fandom.com.

"Santa Claus also known as Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle and simply Santa, is a figure with legendary, mythical, historical and folkloric origins who, in many western cultures, is said to bring gifts to the homes of the good children during the late evening and overnight hours of Christmas Eve," the website said.

"The modern figure was derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, which, in turn, may have part of its basis in hagiographical tales concerning the historical figure, gift-giver Saint Nicholas, who was said to have dropped bags of gold down poor people's chimneys."

Anyhow, joining the superheroes will be R2D2 and C3PO. And is that Slimer from Ghostbusters? He's more of an anti-hero. Or just a ghost who needs to be busted.

And if you'd rather return to a moment in the past when times were simpler, there'll be a home-made Back to the Future DeLorean time machine out the front of the store.

A gold-coin donation will get you a photo with the heroes and other characters. All proceeds go to the Starlight Children's Foundation. The event runs from 6pm to 8pm.

Mall Comeback

Speaking of the world of fantasy, a cracking video has been produced of Newcastle cosplayers doing their thing to the sounds of the song Little Green Bag, made extra famous in the movie Reservoir Dogs.

"Lookin' back on the track, gonna do it my way," the lyrics go.

Which sounded to us like commentary on the Supercars event, which was happening up the road while the cosplayers filmed in the Hunter Street mall.

Cosplayer-in-chief Glen Fredericks said the cosplayers helped the mall "stage a comeback".

The event, which involved a meet-up and festivities at Ka-Fey cafe, attracted TV cameras and "a riot of colourful characters from television and movie screens".

"Cosplay is more than just making or wearing a costume," said Brenton Portus, of Jesmond.

"You do it to bring life to a character. The fans, no matter their age, have already made a connection through the comic books, television shows or movies. You just want to do their hero, who is also your hero, justice."
