Here's why a Police Scotland helicopter was flying over Leith late last night

Several members of Edinburgh's Leith community took to social media late last night to try and find out why a helicopter was spotted flying low over the Pilrig Park area.

The helicopter was in the area for a couple of hours, with locals reporting on Twitter :

"I just woke up to it. Sounded super low. Too dark to see anything. Wonder if it’s a police helicopter."

Another said: "I was just about to fall asleep when I heard a loud buzzing/rumbling noise outside. I saw something in the sky hovering about..."

One Twitter user said: "Nothing like being woken up by a helicopter circling your block??? Leith you okay?"

It turns out that Police Scotland were investigating reports of dangerous driving in the area.

Inspector Jonathan Elliott told Edinburgh Live : "We are investigating a report of dangerous driving, which took place around 10.30pm on Monday, 6 July, in Edinburgh. This required the use of specialist officers at the time.

"Police Scotland takes all such incidents seriously and we are following a positive line of enquiry.

"Anyone with any information should contact police on 101, quoting incident 4239 of 6 July. Or you can contact Crimestopper on 0800 555 111, if you prefer to remain anonymous."
