Here’s what to shop from Daniel Lee’s first collection for Burberry

When Riccardo Tisci left Burberry after five years at the helm, speculation ran rife as to his successor.

In October 2022, Daniel Lee, former Creative Director at Bottega Veneta and the man responsible for redefining the label with viral accessories, took his place at the head of the iconic British brand. The excitement was palpable.

Now, Lee has shown his chops, shaking up the deep-rooted Burberry DNA. The house has dropped its autumn/winter 2023 collection for buyers to browse, just weeks before its upcoming spring/summer 24 runway show as part of London Fashion Week. Its loyal fans are now able to have a gander at what the Bradford-born designer presented at his debut back in February.

For autumn/winter 2023, the catwalk was awash with tartan. Not a single Nova check was laid bare by Lee, who opted for brightly hued designs in clashing shades of violet and marigold set over the classic check designed by Thomas Burberry himself.

The designer championed rambunctious palettes and prints where the models were swathed in plaid and purple colour schemes in the form of longline coats, tights and knitwear sets. Intarsia woollen textures made for snug yet luxurious winter-ready pieces, while also nodding to the brand’s historic incorporation of the fabric in its collections over the decades.

However, the collection was also punctuated by newness. Silver jewels featuring horse-shaped clasp closures and fur-trim trenches breathed life into quintessential Burberry codes, while harking back to the brand’s signature pony-girl aesthetic and classic trench designs.

Commercial value was added in the form of footwear. Faux fur mules appeased the Gen-Z spectator, while genderless marsh boots offered a more subtle adaptation of Lee’s viral puddle boots for Bottega.

The back-to-school aura of the collection was juxtaposed by what we’re dubbing ‘woodlandcore’, thanks to kitsch mallard beanies, hot water bottles and wild rose intarsia graphics. Such accessories demonstrated Lee’s successful subversion of old-school British iconography in order to create endearing, playful designs that made a convincing case for dopamine dressing.

So without further ado, we present to you the best buys from Burberry’s autumn/winter 2023 collection to shop now.
