Herd of cows on the loose spotted running amok through Chipping Sodbury

A herd of cows on the loose was spotted in a South Gloucestershire town last night (May 2).

Steve Burden was about to go out to walk his dog at around 9pm when he saw blue flashing lights outside his house on Finch Road, in Chipping Sodbury. Mr Burden said that he initially thought there was some sort of police incident going on, but that he was then told there were some cows on the loose.

The resident said that, as he walked towards the underpass, around a dozen cows appeared. He said: "I was about to walk our dog and I saw blue flashing lights.

"When I looked out the window and saw about five police cars, then about three or so more came along and one of them reversed about 100 meters towards the underpass by the Tern pub, I said to someone 'mate what’s going on?!'.

"I was thinking someone was being hunted, or a house had been burgled, but he shouted back 'some cows are on the loose'.

"I thought he was joking, so I walked towards the underpass and the police cars were swarming, then all of a sudden about 12 or so cows appeared and went across the road towards the pub and the kebab shop.

"The cows got startled and fled, hitting the police car as they left. They then ran down Heron Way towards the dual carriageway, which could have been a disaster.

"They then split up and the police had to try and round them up."

Mr Burden said his understanding is that the cows came from Sodbury Common, which is about two miles away, and that they were eventually caught.
