Helmut Marko makes "not satisfactory" remark and hints at change under new Red Bull chief

Helmut Marko dismissed the idea of an upheaval at Red Bull after the death of founder Dietrich Mateschitz.

The same, however, cannot be said for sister team AlphaTauri. In the wake of a disappointing year in which the team finished ninth above only strugglers Williams, the Austrian hinted some changes could be made under the former owner's son Mark and new chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff.

The death of Mateschitz in October was a huge blow to everyone involved with Red Bull. He bought the failing Jaguar team at the back end of 2004 and provided the resources necessary for the team bearing the brand name of his energy drink company to become one of F1's most dominant forces.

As is the case when there is any transfer of power at a major company, there was some concern over the future of the firm with many asking if the new men in charge might want to make any sweeping changes to better suit their own vision.

With the Red Bull team, at least, that does not seem to be a worry. Asked if everything is stable under the company's new leadership, Marko told Auto Motor und Sport : "With us everything stays calm.

"Initial talks have been held with our new boss, Mr. Mintzlaff, and everyone agrees that it wouldn't make sense to rebuild a successful package like Red Bull Racing. Where there is a need, there is AlphaTauri – this was not satisfactory in the past year."

Long-serving AlphaTauri chief Franz Tost will be expected to turn things around in 2023 (PA)

He went on to add: "The new boss has assured that he will largely leave everything as it was under Mateschitz." But on AlphaTauri, Marko pointed out the areas in which improvements need to be made after a dismal 2022.

Marko said: "They were beaten below their value. For the potential, technically and financially, ninth place is not acceptable. They made a lot of mistakes in strategy. The car had too little downforce. At the moment we are in the process of taking stock and looking at which screws we have to turn."

But the idea of selling AlphaTauri to allies Honda is off the table. The Austrian declared: "When Honda comes back they need a top team – that can't be AlphaTauri, especially not if there were no longer any synergies with us if we weren't coupled with another engine."
