Helicopter with army markings that made emergency landing on Melbourne oval not part of ADF

The Australian Defence Force says a helicopter painted to look like an army chopper which made an emergency landing in Melbourne's south-east this afternoon is not part of its fleet.

The helicopter landed on an oval near the Kooyong Tennis Centre just after midday, and was met by emergency services.

The Kiowa helicopter, which had army branding painted on the side of the aircraft, landed safely with no one onboard injured.

The ADF has confirmed the helicopter was sold off in 2018 and said it was making inquiries into why it was flying with army colours and markings.

Two men in civilian clothing climbed out of the helicopter after it landed.

The ADF said a number 28 Kiowa Bell 206 was decommissioned in 2018 and was one of 22 sold into private hands in 2019.

It was bought for $225,609 by a private buyer from Malvern.

It had previously been in service with the 161 Reconnaissance Squadron in Darwin.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it was aware of the incident and was gathering information, including a report from the pilot.
